These last few pages make me wonder what Carville really had in mind when he told her she might not want to go into work.

This is gonna be a NOVEL, i’m sorry–but I think I can help shed a little light on this! Because I can see where you’re coming from, but I think the explanation may take a little unpacking! Bear with me, here! c: The reasons for the explosive response to Carville’s misgendering Owen as compared to, in this case, the violent deaths of Shiloh/Bec are as follows:
1! (I’m cis so I don’t want to speak on behalf of the trans community; I’m just going by my own observation, here :o) Misgendering is, unfortunately, pretty common in the lives of trans/nb/non-cis individuals! Murder, as it so happens, is not. I can’t speak for the whole fandom but I’m ASSUMING that none of us, thus far, have been murdered. (again, tentative statement.) In contrast, a fair hunk of the fandom is trans/nb and have experienced misgendering throughout much of their lives! The fact that this transgression is so commonplace, compounded by the sexual/inappropriate/degrading nature of misgendering as an action, makes it much more shocking and intense than murder–especially in a webcomic where murder is often coded as wickedly fun and high-octane (it’s a zombie comic, after all!) It’s the same underlying principle applied to why you’d see a 10,000lb anvil pancake a Loony Toons character ’til they’re soot and marrow, but not see Daffy Duck forcing himself on Tasmanian Devil.
2! I don’t want to speak for Jess/Eli, but from my vantage point Owen’s a character who’s written into the comic in such a way that the audience is meant to, WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT, *care* about him. He’s a very troubled little boy–and yeah, he’s a horrible, gruesome little human being–but he resonates with almost *everyone.* We all love him, we’ve all been along for this ride with him from Chapter… 3?? Whereas Bec and Shiloh are just a pair of misfits who pop up here and again!
3! This should go without saying but you should never ever under any circumstances misgender anyone, no matter how shitty a person they are. I’m sure you know that, but it warrants repeating regardless. Pronouns are not a privilege, they are a right: whether they’re the second coming of Christ or Hitler reincarnate, you use the pronouns they ask you to. No room for negotiation.

Certain face shapes are considered more “feminine”, like how a prominent chin is “manly” so Owen might’ve been trying to mask that aspect of his face, especially since, being young, his face would have a much more “girly”, “soft” look to it. No clue about the fingers, though. Maybe he had some accident with one hand and wanted it to be symmetrical?
Now im curious about his relationship with pj. I assumed that Owen was gay and had a crush on pj. But now that it has been offical confirmed this redefines the dynamics of their relationship. Im guessing that Owen was tormented (something that is horribly common in today’s society) for being trans and it really screwed him up. Which would explain why he killed Pj’s bullies and freaked out on pj for not doing anything. Very very interesting.
So, between the look on Owen’s face and the hover text when you scroll over page saying, ‘psa don’t be a carville don’t do this’, I’m going to have to assume “Stupid little girl” relates to his past with Chainey. In which case, I feel as though it’s either going to be flash back time or ‘Owen Smash’ Ubber Berzerk time.
